Man arrested, accused of resisting after heated Springdale traffic stop

"Because of the situation becoming more tense and rapidly evolving, I slightly retreated and withdrew my service weapon."

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — A traffic stop that police say quickly became heated led to the arrest of a man in Springdale on Sept. 20.

According to a preliminary report from the Springdale Police Department, the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 20.

The report said an officer witnessed a vehicle briefly travel westbound in an eastbound lane to avoid a stopped vehicle in a turn lane.

The traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as 34-year-old Cory Sullivan. Police then claim that Sullivan became "irate" and "verbally aggressive."

The report said the officer was unaware of the reason for Sullivan's alleged aggressiveness. Sullivan was then asked to step out of the vehicle so that he could be checked for weapons.

After Sullivan allegedly failed to comply with orders to exit the vehicle multiple times, a responding officer attempted to remove him, according to the report.

"Cory fought me and prevented me from removing him out of the vehicle," the report said. Again, repeating commands and then again allegedly failing to comply, the officer deployed their taser, to no avail.

The report then claims that the situation became more intense, prompting the withdrawal of the officer's service weapon.

"Because of the situation becoming more tense and rapidly evolving, I slightly retreated and withdrew my service weapon and waited for other officers to respond," the report said.

Upon arrival of more officers, Sullivan complied and exited the vehicle, but the report claims he began to disobey orders again.

"Cory disobeyed more commands to get on the ground. Once Cory kneeled on the ground, we assisted him onto his stomach. While attempting to affect the arrest, Cory continued to tense his arms and actively resist arrest," the report said.

Sullivan was eventually placed in handcuffs and arrested. He has since been booked into the Washington County Detention Center, facing charges of obstructing governmental operations, resisting arrest, and driving left of center. He was released the same day as his arrest on a $1,850 bond.

Sullivan is expected in court on Oct. 21.
