FORT SMITH, Ark. — A 23-year-old man who allegedly caused a deadly crash after leading law enforcement on a chase in Fort Smith pleaded not guilty on Nov. 26.

Kevin Swafford faces charges of manslaughter, fleeing and exceeding the speed limit, and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief. He is being held on a $150,000 bond in the Sebastian County Jail.

His jury trial is set for April 7, 2025.

On Nov. 16, Swafford's passenger, 25-year-old Calvin Eubanks, died at the scene of the crash at Zero and 31st streets, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP).

A trooper attempted to stop Swafford because he reportedly had no license plate. Instead of stopping, ASP said Swafford tried to flee. During the chase, which began on Towson Avenue, Swafford allegedly disregarded traffic lights while driving at a high rate of speed in areas with heavy traffic.

After running a red light, Swafford reportedly caused a collision with three other vehicles. According to ASP, only Swafford and one other driver sustained minor injuries.

"The suspect was driving recklessly and putting the public in extreme danger. The citizens of Fort Smith should be able to enjoy a safe Saturday evening," Col. Mike Hagar with ASP said. "Although we regret any loss of life, we thank God other motorists were not seriously injured."
