Northwest Arkansas doctor granted permission to leave country for fifth time while awaiting sexual assault trial

The move comes around the same time that Maass' trials were rescheduled.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A Cave Springs doctor awaiting trial for allegedly sexually assaulting patients has been granted permission by Benton and Washington county courts to leave the country for a fifth time.

Adam Maass, 53, was arrested in 2022 and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault in separate cases out of the two counties.

The accusations include an allegation of Maass touching a woman's breast without her consent during a medical exam in 2021. The woman's medical records of the visit allegedly did not mention a documented breast exam by Maass, officials said.

Court documents say that a dozen women have come forward with allegations regarding Maass.

After his 2022 arrest, Maass was released on bond and has since been awaiting his trials. In that time, he has made multiple motions to modify the conditions of his release to allow him to leave the country.

Most recently, a motion was granted by Benton County on May 21 on the condition that his bondsman was in agreement and had knowledge of the trip.

The order says that Maass has previously complied the several other times this has happened, so the state does not object.

The order allows Maass to travel to Munich, Germany, from June 18 through June 26. He must surrender his passport when he returns.

Washington County filed a similar order on May 23.

This will be the fifth time that Maass has been granted permission to leave the country while awaiting trial in Washington and Benton counties. Court documents suggest that the trips are to visit his daughter and son-in-law.

The following are previous trips Maass has gotten permission to take:

  • On March 1, 2023, Maass was granted permission to travel to Germany from March 9 through March 16.
  • On June 27, 2023, Maass was granted permission to travel to Germany from July 13 through July 22.
  • On Sept. 13, 2023, Maass was granted permission to travel to Germany from Sept. 28 through Oct. 13.
  • On Feb. 27, 2024, Maass was granted permission to travel to Germany from March 11 through March 22.

Washington County first expressed concern that Maass would not return, denying his first motion to leave the country in 2023 by noting that he is facing 25 to 100 years in prison and up to $75,000 fines for his two cases.

"Given the defendant's exposure, the number of victims spanning decades, no compelling need for visiting Germany, and the actual relocation of his family to Germany, the state has concerns about whether the defendant has any intention of returning to the United States if allowed to go," the court filing said.

The county ultimately changed course after Benton County approved his travel, and subsequent travel permissions have been granted without issue.

As for his cases, Maass is still awaiting trial dates in both cases. In Benton County, Maass was scheduled to have a pretrial hearing on May 20 and a jury trial beginning on May 21. Now, he has a pretrial hearing scheduled for July 3.

In Washington County, Maass is scheduled to have a hearing on July 22.
