SALLISAW, Okla. — According to Sequoyah County officials, Darrell Rogers has been found guilty of raping, sodomizing, and sexually battering an 89-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease.
The victim, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, was being watched over by family through security cameras when the family members reportedly found "unexpected and disturbing" videos.
A family member gave police "a large amount of video footage of their brother-in-law [Rogers] sexually abusing" the woman, according to police.
Police said the victim "could not communicate ... [and] is very childlike in her behavior."
When Sallisaw police arrested and interviewed Rogers, he reportedly admitted to multiple "sexual acts" with the elderly woman.
Rogers faced three charges, and was found guilty of each:
- Sexual Battery
- Sodomy (Victim Mentally Incapacitated)
- Rape in the First Degree (Victim Mentally Incapacitated)
The jury reportedly recommended the maximum sentence of life in prison.
District Attorney Jack Thorp said, “The facts of this case were disturbing, but the jurors did their duty and reached a just decision based on the evidence presented at the trial."
