CANEHILL, Ark. — On this week's episode of Around the Corner, Jo, Tiffany, and Zac went to Canehill to visit the Historic Cane Hill Museum to learn about the fascinating history of the many-named Arkansas town.
"We get this question a lot, 'Is it Canehill or Cane Hill?' Historically we've had eight name changes— our first post office was established in 1830 as 'Cane Hill', but then we've also been Steam Mill, Boonsboro, Boonsborough, Cane Hill, Boonsborough, Boonsboro, and finally back to Canehill!" said Amanda Cothren, the museum's program and events coordinator.
The team got to go to the back room storage of the museum to learn more about how Canehill, then known as Boonsboro, acted as a hot spot for pottery in the state in the 1800s. Dozens of pieces made in the 19th century are preserved there!
"You can't talk about Canehill without talking about education ... We were founded in 1827, but by 1852 we had a four-year college, it was the first coeducational college in the state," said Cothren.
Jo, Tiffany, and Zac rounded off their trip with a walk around the area's trails.
The Historic Cane Hill Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and features exhibits and timelines detailing much more history than we could cover here!
