ROGERS, Ark. — The 19th annual Secchi Day is being held at Beaver Lake on Saturday, Aug. 17, and this year, a loyal volunteer will also celebrate a big day.
Secchi Day is an event where Beaver Water District staff analyzes water data using a Secchi disk to produce a report. A Secchi Disk is a black and white disc that is lowered into the water to measure water clarity. Volunteers bring their boats to Beaver Lake and collect samples to take Secchi readings.
BWD will also test these samples for chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. BWD states that these tests are used "to determine algal density and nutrient concentration."
The report is presented on Beaver Lake Volunteer Day at the lake-wide litter cleanup event, which will be held on Oct. 12 this year.
Among the volunteers this year is Robert Lewis, who has been to all 19 Secchi Days. This year, the event lands on his 90th birthday.
When asked why he has attended all 19 events, Lewis said, "It is necessary, and just what people need to do for the welfare of the lake.”
