How will new 327 overlay to 870 area code impact current customers?

Existing numbers with an 870 area code are not required to change their number, but any local calls made within the area must be dialed using all 10 digits.

ARKANSAS, USA — The Arkansas Public Service Commission has officially implemented the new 327 area code overlay to the 870 area code region, which encompasses most of Arkansas.

An overlay adds another area code to the same region that an existing area code already serves. This addition does not require customers to change their existing number, but they will now have to dial an area code to make local calls.

Starting Jan. 19, customers making any local calls within the 870 area must be dialed using all 10 digits. Moving forward, calls made with only 7-digit phone numbers will not go through.

Telephone services will start assigning customers phone numbers with the 327 area code on Feb. 20.

Remember:

  • With the new overlay, the price of calls, coverage area, and other rates and services will not change.
  • Any emergency lines like 911 or 988 will remain three-digit numbers. No area code is necessary to include.
  • For long distance calls, dial 1 before the area code and the 7-digit phone number.
  • Most importantly, safety and security equipment, such as medical alert devices, need to be programmed to use the new 10-digit dialing. Contact any medical alert or security provider on whether your equipment needs to be programmed.
