Arkansas gas prices down for Labor Day travelers, AAA reports

AAA said drivers might continue to see lower prices going into the fall, barring any major disruptions to oil and gas.

ARKANSAS, USA — During a busy Labor Day travel weekend, the average gas prices in Arkansas have remained lower than the national average.

Going into the weekend, AAA said gas prices were hovering around $3 a gallon across the state.

On Monday, even after the uptick in drivers filling up at the pumps, AAA’s website still showed the Arkansas average at $2.97 while the national average was $3.33.

Nick Chabarria, spokesperson for AAA, said he did not expect a significant spike in the days following the holiday either.

“Every local gas station ultimately controls their price, but there are a number of factors that go into what we pay at the pump,” Chabarria said.

He said the number one factor is crude oil prices, which account for 50-60% of the final price for drivers.

“Then, it comes down to the local gas stations: who owns them, the marketing, the cost that they put in to operate where they do,” Chabarria said. “It’s going to vary station by station, but generally speaking, we typically don't see widespread price changes on a certain day of the week compared to others.”

He added price does typically vary by season, though, and based on typical trends, drivers might continue to see lower prices over the next few months, barring any major disruptions to oil and gas.

“Typically, in the fall is when we'll start to see prices decline for a couple of reasons,” Chabarria said. “One: demand typically falls out as people are traveling less and school is back in session, and also we see the switch over from summer blend to winter-blend gasoline.”
