FORT SMITH, Ark. — The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (UAFS) and the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) will host a workshop on Jan. 23 at the Center for Economic Development on campus to help civilians know what to do if there is an active shooter.
From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the Civilian Response to Active Shooter workshop will be led by FSPD Officer Robyn Shoptaw.
For safety measures, Officer Shoptaw will teach situational awareness and de-escalation techniques to prepare those in the community in case there is ever an active shooter.
The workshop will also teach attendees:
- The run, hide, and fight civilian responses during an active shooter.
- Techniques to become hyper-aware of environments in order to protect yourself.
- How to make last-minute decisions in times of crisis.
- Understand your body's physiological changes during stress-inducing situations.
- Learn de-escalation techniques to "a person in a heightened state of emotion."
