SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The annual Strawberry Moon will adorn the sky this evening shortly after sunset.

June’s full moon got its name from tribes of Indigenous people in the Northeast who realized the annual occurrence coincided with the strawberry harvest, not due to any colorization, though sometimes certain atmospheric conditions may provide a brighter pink, red, or sometimes yellow hue.

The Strawberry Moon may briefly appear larger than normal due to its low angle on the horizon. Rest assured, it’s not actually closer, it’s just an illusion.

Those wanting to take a peek at the full moon should look to the southeast shortly after sunset, which is 8:36 p.m. this evening in 5COUTNRY. It’s right after the sun sets that the moon will look most vivid.

Skies will be partly cloudy, though some breaks in the clouds should at least allow for partial viewing. An hour-by-hour forecast can be found here.

According to NASA this is the first time the Strawberry Moon has occurred on the first full day of summer in 40 years.
