'Antiques Roadshow' uncovers treasures of Northwest Arkansas residents

"I actually picked this up at an estate sale three weeks ago for $2.50, and it was appraised for $200," one guest said.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The popular show known as the "Antiques Roadshow" set up shop in Bentonville on May 14.

"We've been wanting to go to the antiques roadshow since we were girls and watched it with our Memaw," Becky, one of the guests, said.

Crystal Bridges hosted an all-day appraisal event for the PBS series. This is the third time the show has been in Arkansas after making stops in Hot Springs and Little Rock.

"I have been on this roadshow since the dawn of time," poster appraiser Nicolas "Nico" Lowry said. "Meeting great people [and] seeing great material keeps us coming back year after year."

People from far and wide came out to see how much their items were really worth.

"It's nice to inform people," the show's executive director Marsha Bemko said. "In addition to the shows we're making, we're going to tell thousands of people about what they own."

From a collection, Emily, another "Antiques Roadshow" guest, brought an embroidery piece from 1808.

"This probably hung on the walls of a cabin in Tennessee that was made from like the Virgin woods," she said.

She said the full collection was estimated to be around $8,000.

Becky brought a German impressionistic oil painting of a misty morning in a small mountain town.

"I actually picked this up at an estate sale three weeks ago for $2.50, and it was appraised for $200," she said.

It was a positive experience at Crystal Bridges for both the appraisers and the guests.

"We're offered this great national platform on which to strut our antique intelligence, which is great," Lowry said. "That's the highlight of it is traveling around the country, seeing wonderful things, great places that we might not normally go."

"It's been a great day we've crossed off a bucket list item and found out treasures do exist at estate sales," Becky said.
