FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jashaud Stewart, a defensive end on the Arkansas Razorback football team, was arrested for burglary and criminal mischief in Fayetteville on Dec. 13.
According to Washington County inmate records, Stewart was booked at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A preliminary report from Washington County said Stewart had an altercation with a woman days prior on Dec. 10 while they were on their way to a casino with a group of people. The report states the incident happened inside the vehicle they were traveling in. Officials said Stewart was "pinching her on the leg and squeezing her upper right arm," causing the woman to cry. The group decided to tell Stewart to "get out" of the vehicle and left him on the side of the highway, the report said.
After the two went their separate ways, officials said on the same day, it was reported to police that the girl's vehicle's front windshield had been "smashed." Officials said witnesses revealed that Stewart had stolen the girl's laptop, and shortly after it was found smashed in the parking garage of her apartment. Police said the witnesses said Stewart had "went into her apartment and took it."
Officials were able to verify through a security video that Stewart was inside the apartment and later at the apartment garage "throwing the laptop against a block wall and walking off." They were also able to watch a security video of a person walking over to the girl's vehicle but because of the angle of the camera, the vandalism could not be seen. The suspect arrived in a vehicle matching the description of Stewart's vehicle, provided by a witness.
After seeing this, officials called Stewart who "acknowledged there was an incident" that took place on Dec. 10, but refused to speak without his lawyer, the release said. He then agreed to meet with officials outside his apartment, where he was then taken to Washington County jail, officials said.
The 22-year-old is facing one charge of burglarizing a home and one charge of first-degree criminal mischief. He's scheduled to have a hearing on Dec. 15 at 7:45 a.m. at the Washington County Circuit Court.
The Razorbacks list Stewart as a senior defensive end from Jonesboro. During his junior season, he played 10 games with six starts and a career-high 14 tackles.
During the most recent season, Stewart had seven total tackles.
The University's Associate Athletics Director for Communication, Kyle Parkinson, released the following statement regarding the arrest.
"We have been notified of the issue involving Jashaud Stewart. He has been suspended from the team indefinitely. Once we have received and reviewed more information, we will make a determination on his status with our football program moving forward."
