ARKANSAS, USA — Following a weekend of shopping with Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Tuesday, Dec. 3, marks Giving Tuesday, a global movement encouraging communities to give back to local nonprofits.
Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) joins many organizations in the area pushing for donations for Giving Tuesday.
For 24 hours, starting Tuesday at noon, the school is hosting a fundraiser for five campus projects: the Veteran Student Success Center, the Child Advocacy Studies Program, the Dale Montgomery Counseling & Wellness Center, the theatre program, and the food pantry.
"They're all student-facing, so all of the money will go back to our students," NWACC Advancement Associate Emily Brummett said. "Some of that will be within the classroom, and some of that will be for students who have needs outside of the classroom."
More information about the campaign and how to donate can be found here.
For some organizations, like Pedal it Forward, money isn’t the only way to give back.
"We rely on people donating their used bikes, and so every bike that gets donated, we refurbish and will give away to someone," Executive Director Kenny Williams said. "It's a way for us to skip [asking] for money and go straight to our mission."
For Giving Tuesday, the nonprofit is teaming up with several City of Fayetteville organizations for a bike drive.
"Those bikes will immediately have an impact because they'll get fixed up and given away within the next several months," Williams said.
The goal, Williams said, is to accumulate hundreds of donated bikes to give away during the holiday season.
"All bikes that come in get refurbished by our volunteers," Williams said. "The ones that are fixed most immediately will be given to kids in December in Fayetteville, and then the rest of them will be slowly fixed and given out throughout the spring of 2025."
If you have a bike or bike parts you would like to donate, you can drop them off Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fayetteville Recycling Center, the parks office, or until 7 p.m. at the police station.
No matter how you choose to give, Williams said it’s a great time to make a difference in the community.
"We've spent a lot of time thinking about our family ourselves for the last week, so I'd encourage everyone on Giving Tuesday to go in your garage and look at that old bike and imagine what it could do for someone else in the community [who] might not have one," Williams said.
