Arkansas ranks #4 in the US for roadway deaths

ARKANSAS, USA — According to the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement (ACHI), the state ranked fourth in motor-vehicle fatality rates in the U.S. in 2022. 

The report states that from 2016 to 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 4,089 deaths on Arkansas roadways. These deaths include pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and motorists.

An analysis of these findings revealed that deaths on Arkansas roads were highest during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. The NHTSA reported 691 deaths that year. 

Demographics

During the six-year period, of the 4,089 deaths, 2,865 were male and 1,222 were female. Two were not reported, according to ACHI. 

The report also reveals that the age group with the most deaths is 65 years or older, with 745 deaths reported. The second age group is those between 25-34, with 714 deaths reported. The age group with the least deaths were those under 19, with 300 deaths reported in the state.

According to ACHI, 1,528 of the total deaths that were reported did not use a seatbelt.
