ARKANSAS, USA — A World War II veteran celebrated his 102nd birthday at the Springdale Senior Center on Nov. 12, just a day after Veterans Day.
Although it was Harold Chilton's big day, he was caught off guard by the big celebration. He thought he was just there to show off his musical talent.
"I really did not know what to expect here because all I understood was that they were going to have me play a piano," Chilton said.
Chilton is no stranger to entertaining. While he grew up in a house with a piano, his interest in playing instruments heightened. That interest later translated into his service where he played in the Marine Corps Band.
Before the draft could decide where Chilton would serve, he went into the Marine Corps.
"I knew that the draft board was taking an interest in me," Chilton said. "I figured if I wait for them to choose my service, I may end up in something I don't want to be."
During his service, he was able to carry on his childhood interest.
"They were going to put me in a Marine Band ... made up of ordinary marines who could maybe play an instrument," Chilton said.
On his 102nd birthday, surrounded by music and people, Chilton reflected on how the world has changed over the years.
"So many changes in this world are just amazing. You know, it's hard to keep up with it," he said.
Amidst the change, he said his faith keeps him going.
"I pray each day," Chilton said. "I do because I believe in God. I believe he exists. I live each day hoping that God will use me to interest somebody."
