LINCOLN, Ark. — Roy Clayton Shannon or better known as "Tubby" celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday, Dec. 3. Tubby has no plans of retiring soon as he's been a barber for almost 70 years.
"I got out of the service and thought I might be a barber so I went to barber school in Tulsa," said Tubby.
66 years and a few barbershops in the region later he cuts hair at his shop in Lowell called Tubby's Barber Shop.
I'm gonna be there until I quit I guess," said Tubby. "I've got clients, everyone over here have followed me for years."
150 people came to his birthday party on Sunday from family to friends to numerous clients. He recalled memories of when his haircuts only cost 50 cents. They now cost $15.
"When we raised up to 75 cents. Man, I got rich that day. I cut up nobody gonna believe this now. I cut 101 heads on Saturday," said Tubby.
Tubby and his wife Charlotte have been married since 1957. She said he always treated her wonderfully. She also cuts his hair.
"I was cutting hair in Lincoln when I got married in 1957. And her dad thought I didn't show up. I had worked overtime," said Tubby.
"I had a stroke and he takes good care of me," said Charlotte. "And just how hard he works. I mean, he just always worked hard. He didn't have any real hobbies. It's working," said Charlotte.
Tubby's only grandson Clay lives in Tulsa but makes the drive for a haircut.
“My best pal growing up always. Always came to him with everything" said Clay. “I want to grow up to be just like him. You can see that everyone really loves him. Everyone really cares about him," said Clay.
Tubby says the relationships he's built with people are the reason he's still cutting hair.
"Be nice to people and they'll be nice to you" said Tubby.
