It's also important to be proactive to prevent fires or injuries to your loved ones.

Here are some tips fire officials offer to grill safely this holiday:

  • Before using propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks.
  • Make sure your grill is clean of grease or fat buildup including the trays below.
  • Do not use your grill near your home, deck railings, under eaves or overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
  • Do not add "other flammable liquids to the fire when using charcoal starting fluid."
