BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The Benton County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) warns residents about an uptick in scam calls that are telling people there is a warrant out for their arrest.

According to BCSO, the scam callers say the warrants are for failure to appear in court for jury duty. Officials said the scammers are "very authoritative" in their tone of voice and ask victims for money.

BCSO said victims are asked to get money on a card from Walmart or other stores and "stay on the phone."

Officials said the scammers are spoofing the sheriff's office phone number to call and scam residents.

"As a reminder, law enforcement will never require you to stay on the phone with them while demanding you purchase a money card. We will not require payment over the phone and we will not threaten arrest if you do not pay," said BCSO.

Warrants for arrest are handled in person and not over the phone, BCSO said.
