BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The Bentonville Fire Department (BFD) announced it is accepting burn permits to help residents with storm debris clean-up efforts.

The city will make temporary adjustments to the zone requirements to include impacted areas.

Burn permits will be accepted from July 26 to Aug. 4 at 5 p.m.

Requirements

Residents must access a burn permit at BFD before burning by calling 479-271-3151. The following information will be needed:

  • Name
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • Location of burn
  • Type and amount of debris

The only debris that will be permitted to burn is trees or shrubs damaged during the storm. Building material such as milled lumber, plastic, cardboard or furnishings will be prohibited. The debris should be 18 inches in diameter or less.

Burn permits will be issued from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and must be renewed daily by phone.

Precautions

Burning requires wind speeds of less than 10 mph. If you smell or suspect natural gas, the city asks that you do not burn and call Black Hills Energy at 888-890-5554.

The city warns that if burn piles are up to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high, they must be kept at least 25 feet away from structures, combustabile materials, utilities and roadways. Debris piles that are 10 feet in diameter and 5 feet high should be 50 feet away. Anything larger is prohibited, the city said.

Residents are also required to monitor the fire until it is completely extinguished and an extinguishing method should be "immediately available."

This includes:

  • Dirt
  • Sand
  • Garden hose
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Other sources that have the capability to extinguish the fire

"All primary utilities at the permit location must be fully operational at the time of request," the city said.

The city said fire crews will do random inspections and reserve the right to cancel permits for those who do not comply.

Permits will not be given if the city is under a burn ban.
