Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., speaks at University of Arkansas

King is the CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, where people can learn about her father.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas hosted Bernice A. King for a moderated question and answer session as part of the Distinguished Lecture series.

King is the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. She serves as the CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social change and trademarked the brand Nonviolence365, which was King's philosophy of nonviolence.

According to The King Center website, nonviolence is described as "a love centered way of thinking, speaking, acting, and engaging that leads to personal, cultural, and societal transformation."

"My father was greatly misunderstood by so many people. I wouldn’t categorize it as a white thing, I’d say it’s an all people thing,” King said.

In her session, she discussed her father's famous quotes, and what they mean to her.

"'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character;' when my father made that declaration that was the hopeful part, the part that he’s saying he’s hopeful after we eradicate racism,” King said.

When asked how she would write the curriculum in schools about her father, she said she would start by listening to one another.

“I’d probably start with a blank sheet of paper and what I mean by that is, I would start from scratch. I want everyone to bring their quote-on-quote suggestions regarding what needs to be a part of our curriculum,” King said.

She said her goal is to share her parents' way of life to younger generations.

"Black history is not just for the black community, it's for all of us," King said.
