Black Hills Energy turned off 113 customers' gas devices after vehicle hits gas line in Tontitown

As a part of the restoration process, Black Hills technicians are going door-to-door to turn off the gas at each customer's location.

TONTITOWN, Ark. — Black Hills Energy shut down 113 customers' gas devices Sunday night after a vehicle hit and damaged a gas line in Tontitown at the corner of Barrington Road and Arbor Acre Avenue.

The crash happened at 5 p.m. and shortly after Black Hills Energy crews went door-to-door turning off gas at the homes impacted.  The company tells us as of 10:15 p.m. the gas line is repaired and they will now once again go door-to-door restoring gas for residents.

On scene, 5NEWS spoke with a couple who says they were surprised to get a knock on the door from technicians.

"We're praying that it doesn't get too cold in here until then and we hope everyone is safe through this," said Joe and Lynda Bonds, Tontitown residents.

The couple had a portable thermometer showing after four hours the temperature inside their home dropped to 58 degrees.

"Repairs have been completed, and our technicians have begun the relighting process," said Robin Mizell, Arkansas Community Affairs Manager for Black Hills Energy.

They advise customers to not relight their gas devices themselves.
