Groundbreaking held for Bass Reeves statue

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Fort Smith doesn't have the statue of famous US Marshal Bass Reeves yet. But a spot for it is being prepared at Pendergraft Park on Garrison Avenue in downtown Fort Smith.

That's where the Bass Reeves Legacy Initiative Board broke ground for the statue base Thursday morning. The base will have to be solid since it's going to support a massive life-size bronze statue of a man sitting on a horse, which is expected to be roughly 20 feet tall, and 14 feet long.

Reeves was the famous US Marshal of Judge Parker's days. His statue is expected to be here in about six weeks with dedication planned for May 26.
