What to do if you see a bobcat in Arkansas

Although bobcats have the potential to be vicious predators, their elusive nature typically keeps them away from humans.

ARKANSAS, USA — Despite being elusive and nocturnal, several Arkansas residents have recorded some bobcat sightings recently.

In a Bella Vista Neighbors Facebook group, one resident posted a video of two bobcats running in her front yard. In the comments section, many residents said they have also had recent sightings.

Although it's unclear whether these Bella Vista residents are seeing the same bobcats or different ones, it's important to know a little more about the big cats' habits, diets, and behavior.

Where do they live?

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), bobcats are adaptable creatures that can live in almost any kind of habitat, so they can be spotted statewide. Although there is a stable population of bobcats in Arkansas, they typically avoid "large, intensely cultivated areas."

What do they eat?

Bobcats are carnivores and typically eat smaller prey like rabbits, squirrels, rats, and mice, so they can be a valuable asset to a farm. During fall and winter, they also eat deer but typically feed on carrion.

"Although capable of killing a deer, they mainly go for easier prey," the AGFC said. "They hunt by stealth and deliver a deathblow with a bounce that can cover 10 feet."

Are they a threat?

Due to their elusive nature, bobcats typically shy away from humans. However, illnesses, such as rabies, can cause the cats to be aggressive toward humans. According to the AGFC, they "rarely prey on livestock and poultry, although it is not unheard of."

Hunting regulations

In Arkansas, the hunting season for bobcats concluded on Feb. 29, 2024. During hunting season, which lasts from September until February, bobcats can only be hunted in the daytime. They can be hunted with archery equipment or any rifle or shotgun ammunition.

Any hunter or trapper must have a valid Arkansas hunting license to hunt any furbearers.
