LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The U.S. Center for Disease Prevention Control (CDC) confirmed that Arkansas has had two reported cases of the West Nile virus in 2024.
The West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can be potentially serious. Symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, however, 8 in 10 people do not develop them.
So far, Saline County has confirmed one case of the virus, while Chicot County confirmed one other.
Though the Natural State hasn't reported any other cases so far this year, three surrounding states have reported double-digit cases this year.
Texas has reported 37 cases, Louisiana reported 19, and Mississippi reported 18 in counties across all three states.
Since there are no vaccines or medicines to treat West Nile virus in people, the best thing to do is try to prevent mosquito bites with some of the following tips from the CDC:
- Use Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellents
- Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants
- Wear clothing and gear treated with permethrin
- Control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors
