Franklin County officials voice prison site concerns with Gov. Sanders directly

"I know this may not be the 'answer' many of you are hoping for, but I am committed to being transparent."

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Local officials in Franklin County met with Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to voice concerns about the state's plans to build a new prison in their community.

During the meeting, Charleston Mayor Mike Baumgartner was joined by state Gary Senator Stubblefield, Representative Eubanks, Judge Ricky Bowman, and Chief Deputy Little. They were able to directly share the community's key issues with the governor, which included:

  • Lack of transparency in the site selection process
  • Questions about infrastructure needs and capacity
  • Potential impacts on the local workforce and property values
  • Public safety and overall community impact

While the governor reiterated information that a representative of her office shared at a recent town hall, she said some details about the prison remain unknown, such as utility requirements for construction and security level of inmates.

However, in a post on his Facebook page, Mayor Baumgartner said the governor is committed to maintaining open communication with regular updates. She also pledged to support any necessary infrastructure improvements as the project moves forward.

"I know this may not be the 'answer' many of you are hoping for, but I am committed to being transparent," Baumgartner said. "This is a complex issue that will also be handled through legal and legislative channels."

The mayor asked residents to keep discussions "constructive" rather than negative, emphasizing the need for the community to work together to protect Charleston's quality of life.

Baumgartner said he will continue advocating for the best outcome for their city.

The Arkansas Board of Corrections voted to approve the purchase of the land in Franklin County on Nov. 8. 5NEWS has reached out to the BOC for what the next steps are in the process.
