Fort Smith residents not allowed to have gravel in front yards, city says

According to officials, materials used to cover parking surfaces on the "front or side yard exterior," should be approved by the city.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The City of Fort Smith reminded residents that gravel is not permitted in front or side yards in a statement released on March 28.

According to officials, materials used to improve parking surfaces on the "front or side yard exterior," should be approved by the city.

Approved materials include:

  • concrete
  • asphalt
  • brick pavers

Of these materials, only 40% can cover the parking surface, the city said.

The only exception is if there is already an existing material on the parking surface that is maintained. If the existing parking area is already overgrown with grass, weeds or dirt, then it no longer qualifies as an exception.

At this point, the surface is required to be completely removed or redone with city-approved materials.

Officials encourage residents to check with the city before buying a load of materials to install or improve a surface on their yards to avoid violating the city ordinance.
