Crews working to fix damaged roads after winter storms

Potholes and slick muddy streets are issues around Crawford County and Bella Vista.

ARKANSAS, USA — Cities all across 5COUNTRY are feeling the effects of the recent winter storms, specifically on their roads.

Due to the freezing conditions and wet weather, roads now are filled with potholes and slick muddy spots.

"We've had a multitude of calls They're still coming in right now. We're trying to get to the most serious spots at this time. But we are working everyone if they could just be patient," Dustin Willet, Crawford County Road Superintendent said.

"It's worse because we've had so long of a freeze. A day or two we, you know, we still have soft spots. But have over a week's time period is really taking a toll on the road conditions throughout the whole county," Willet added.

Willet said that as of right now, they're addressing the most serious repairs first and expect to make a bulk of repairs once the sun is out and the temperatures warm up.

"High traffic areas, our bus routes, because we want to make sure the buses are safe with the children on trying to get back and forth to school. Any area that the fire departments, EMS or police that call and say they're having issues with, that's gonna be our main priorities."

To report any damages to roads in Crawford County, you can call the Crawford County Highway Department.

Cassi Lapp, Communications Director for Bella Vista, says that they're seeing the roads weakened and damaged in heavy traffic areas.

"The ground is so saturated that we can't get our necessary equipment out to the road to repair them until we get some drier weather," Lapp said. "The weight of the heavier equipment just crumbles the asphalt or causes a rut or a bigger pothole than you would normally see."

She said crews are working right now to survey roads and prepare.

"Because of the weather that gives our street crews a little more opportunity to go and survey the damage, see what needs to be done to make the fix which ones are worse than others," Lapp said.

To report any recent damage in Bella Vista due to weather events Lapp encourages residents to report issues to info@bellavistaar.gov or report online https://bellavistaar.gov/streets.
