Sebastian Lake fire rekindled, multiple agencies responding

Sebastian County Emergency Management told 5NEWS multiple structures were in immediate danger and nearly 19 acres burned.

SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. — A grass fire near Sebastian Lake has rekindled and crews are responding to the scene.

The fire in Sebastian County started and was put out on Oct. 24 after multiple crews responded.

According to the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), the fire was near the 8100 block of Sebastian Lake Drive and spread about 19 acres.

On Oct. 25, SCSO reported that the fire had restarted, and multiple fire crews were on the scene trying to put it out again.

Sebastian County Emergency Management told 5NEWS that crews were called out at around 2:38 p.m. on Oct. 24 and multiple agencies responded, including Arkansas Forestry and at least six volunteer fire departments.

"We received a call of a brush fire that was getting out of control, called in by a nearby homeowner," said Will Sappington, Deputy Director for Sebastian County Emergency Management. "Arkansas Forestry Commission brought in their dozer, and they cut a fire line around the fire, and our teams of our fire departments put out the fires here and on the northeast side of the fire."

Travis Cooper with Sebastian County Emergency Management said that as of 4 p.m. three to four structures were in immediate danger but are now safe and no structure fires or injuries had been reported.

Some Arkansas Valley Electric customers did report losing power and officials said a transformer possibly caused the fire.

"When the transformer blew, and it fell down and hit the ground below it, and with our dry conditions and the wind being up, it just took off with it," Sappington said. "With that dry conditions and the rapid wind that we'll have sometimes blow through this area, it can cause fires to spread up pretty."

Sappington said this fire wasn't caused by an open flame but he's still reminding people that Sebastian County is under a burn ban as the area hasn't seen rain in weeks.

"With burn bans, no open flames are allowed," Sappington said.

The fire was just inches from a few houses on Sebastian Lake Drive.

"They're extremely grateful," Sappington said. "Several of them, when it first started, jumped on it and started putting it out themselves."
