ARKANSAS, USA — As dove hunting season approaches, Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas reminds hunters that shooting power and fiber lines can result in legal trouble.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, dove hunting season runs from Sept. 7 to Oct. 27, then again from Dec. 8 to Jan. 15. Electric Cooperatives said doves tend to perch on power and fiber lines, making them a target for hunters.

"The risks of damaging electric and fiber-optic equipment, as well as causing potential physical injury, far outweighs the rewards of hunting," Electric Cooperatives said.

What exactly is illegal?

Shooting near or toward electrical equipment can damage it and impact the electric or internet services of those nearby. Needless to say, it can also cause physical harm to bystanders.

It is illegal to shoot near or toward:

  • Power lines
  • Fiber lines
  • Utility poles
  • Transformers
  • Substations

In conclusion, hunters are not allowed to "trespass or hunt" in the immediate area of utility property or infrastructure, the release said.

Safety Tips

Electric Cooperatives released the following tips to help hunters stay safe and out of trouble.

1. Take time to get to know the area you plan to hunt in. Check for power lines and equipment, especially in heavily wooded areas.

2. Look for signs or postings that warn about electrical safety, especially if you plan to use a tree stand.

3. Look for power lines. If you see any, stay at least 10 feet away when setting up or taking down a stand.

4. Do not climb a utility pole.

5. Do not place dove decoys on power lines or other utility equipment. This can cause serious injuries to lineworkers.
