Sanitary sewer replacement impacting some areas in Fort Smith

City officials said the collapse caused a sinkhole that led to an overflow of the sanitation sewer.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The City of Fort Smith announced on May 2 that a sanitary sewer replacement is underway and will impact some areas.

The City said crews are replacing "approximately 350 linear feet of a 10-inch sanitary sewer main and two manholes."

The affected areas are between North I and North J Streets specifically in the alley between North 8th and 9th Streets, where a part of the main collapsed, the City said.

City officials said the collapse caused a sinkhole that led to an overflow of the sanitation sewer.

The City said crews have already implemented bypass pumping to control the system's flow, but full completion is estimated by July 3.

A map of the impacted area is detailed below.
