FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville has been named a 2023 Volunteer Community of the Year.
According to a release from the city, the award is co-sponsored by the Governor's Office, the Arkansas Municipal League, and EngageAR.
The city received the award at a luncheon in Little Rock on Jan. 11.
Fayetteville Chief of Staff Susan Norton accepted the award, along with the 2023 Trendsetter Award from Arkansas Business, which the city announced it had won last year.
"Fayetteville was recognized as a 2023 Volunteer Community of the Year for its dedication to environmental protection and conservation, both in the city’s sustainability efforts as an organization and its residents’ year-round engagement," the release said.
“It’s an honor for Fayetteville to be recognized as a Volunteer Community of the Year. We are grateful to receive the award, which is a testament to both our staff’s hard work and our residents’ dedication to helping us maintain a clean, beautiful and healthy city," Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan said.
Fayetteville was named a volunteer community of the year for the past four years, being recognized for the following services:
- Waste diversion services, including the city's recycling program and its food waste and composting programs.
- Native ecology protection and restoration, including invasive species removals and the annual Celebration of Trees giveaway.
- Environmental cleanup events, such as parks and waterway cleanups, the annual Earth Day community-wide cleanups, and the city's Adopt Your Outdoors program.
