Fayetteville Animal Services extending free adoption event

Now through Saturday, July 6, adoption fees will be waived for every adoptable pet at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Fayetteville Animal Services is waiving adoption fees now through Independence Day celebrations for its Big Summer Blowout adoption event.

According to Animal Services Superintendent Justine Lentz, shelters tend to reach their capacity during the summer.

"We have numerous amazing pups and a few adorable kitties eagerly waiting for loving homes," Lentz said. "With our kennels reaching capacity, we're excited to help these wonderful animals find their forever families."

Lentz hopes the Big Summer Blowout will give local families adoptable pets and help the facility maintain space and resources for incoming pets.

"By choosing to adopt, you're both giving a pet a loving home and opening a spot for another animal in need," Lentz said.

The event was initially set for Monday, June 24, and Saturday, June 29, but is now being extended with the event showing success so far.

Now through Saturday, July 6, adoption fees will be waived for every adoptable pet at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter.

The shelter estimated on Saturday, June 29, that they had 16 cats and 14 dogs adopted in the event, but still had 30 pets available for adoption. Adoption fees will be waived for every adoptable pet at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. Each pet is spayed or neutered, up to date on their vaccines, and microchipped.

Shelter Attendant Meredith Warren explained that the timing of the adoption event through Independence Week helps alleviate the influx of pets from celebrations. Warren says fireworks can cause stress for animals and lead to many pets escaping their homes. She says thankfully though, the pets up for adoption through the shelter are all microchipped to help locate owners. She advises pet owners to get microchips and pet tags before the event to help get them back in the case they escape.

If you are interested in adopting, you must first fill out an application form online at the city's website. Once your application is approved, you can come by the shelter to figure out who your future four-legged friend will be. All pets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The shelter is located at 1640 S Armstrong Ave. From Monday through Friday, it is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
