Fayetteville City Council unanimously approves Sunday alcohol sales to be on November ballot

Fayetteville residents may soon be able to buy alcohol on Sundays.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — It's official: Registered voters in Fayetteville will decide in November whether to allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays in the city.

According to Fayetteville City Attorney Kit Williams, a total of 4,276 signatures were verified from a petition led by the organization Keep Our Dollars in Fayetteville. That number of signatures reached the threshold needed to be filed to successfully call for the election.

The Walmart-backed group led the petition in an effort to bring more revenue into the city instead of residents going outside of Fayetteville city limits to buy alcohol.

"I think there's a real understanding that we are losing real tax dollars to other communities when folks have to travel out of town to make those purchases," Keaton Smith with Keep Our Dollars in Fayetteville Committee said.

The Fayetteville City Council voted unanimously to allow the election during the July 16 meeting.

If approved in Fayetteville, it will be the largest city in the state selling alcohol on Sundays.
