FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Fayetteville Public Library (FPL) is reopening some of its doors on April 17 after a fire on its roof damaged parts of the building.
FPL said in a press release that the fire took place "above the Lucky Day collection." According to officials, the fire was put out by 11:30 p.m.
Upon investigation, the fire officials said the cause of the fire was identified as "an ember" from the library's volunteer beekeeper's smudge pot. The library reports that there was smoke throughout the building and said the administrative offices were "heavily impacted."
Because of the smell and residue, the library remained closed for a few days. The library said it plans to clean the carpets, upholstery, surface, walls, shades, and curtains "top to bottom."
The library says that the 641.DELI on Level 1 and Arsaga's, media, adult fiction, and nonfiction, holds locker, genealogy, reference, and a limited selection of youth and teen materials will be available, but the expanded part of the building is still being cleaned until Sunday.
Curbside pickup will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday and holds have been moved to the Mountain St. Lobby. The library says that there will be a delay for youth and teen materials.
Aside from the library closing to the public, the fire also caused the Monday Board of Trustee meeting to be postponed. It is unknown when the library will fully reopen, but the library said digital services are still available to use.
