Fayetteville man featured among USA Mullet Championship's top finalists

Lance Hill said he started growing his mullet during the pandemic. Now, he says, "It's not a hairstyle but a lifestyle."

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Rocked by rockstars like David Bowie and dating as far back as the Greek empire, the mullet has turned heads through the ages.

Fayetteville Lance Hill said the hairstyle has changed his life.

"It's not a hairstyle but a lifestyle," Hill said.

Hill said he adopted the cut after finding a Facebook group called "the mullet that changed my life."

"It's hard to explain," Hill said. "You got to grow a mullet to understand. But, you know, it was the pandemic. Everyone was dying. It was horrible, you know, I grew a mullet. Now I feel alive. I feel like I've been on a living spree ever since then."

Yet, with photos to prove it, Hill's change in lifestyle had to take a break. Hill cut his hair at the request of his bride.

"I told her, I said, 'I'll cut it off for the wedding.' I said, 'But I'm bringing it back. I'm bringing the mullet back, just so you know.' And I did with a vengeance," Hill said jokingly. "Now, if I cut it off, she'd kill me, she'd leave me."

Hill said many question his decision, but he knows they're all just jealous. He now has another reason to wear the hair proudly as he shoots for national attention in the USA Mullet Championships.

"I wasn't expecting to even make the top 500, but here I am [in the] top 10," Hill said. "We're shooting for the top, trying to get that number one spot."

Although it's a party in the back and business in the front, it's not all about fun and games. The competition raises funds for Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors.

"The USA Mullet Champs have already raised $113,000 for our troops, and last year, I believe, is a quarter million," Hill said. "At the end of the day, it's more than just a silly hairstyle. I joined this competition to do good, to help our troops, to help America ... you can't do that with a more American hairstyle than this."

If you catch Hill rocking his hairstyle on the hill, ask him about his hair routine. It could be the secret to a nationally recognized manly mane.

"If I don't win it all this year, [I'm] definitely winning it next year," he said. "If not next year, then the year after. The mullet is here to stay."

Winners for the championship will be announced on Aug. 28 with other local stars competing as well. You can keep up with the competition by visiting the USA Mullet Championships' website.
