City of Fayetteville looking for artists to work on Nelson Hackett Boulevard mural

Think you have what it takes? The city is looking for an artist to paint a mural on Nelson Hackett Boulevard.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville is looking for a qualified muralist to head up a planned outdoor mural project on Nelson Hackett Boulevard.

According to a release from the city, the mural will be a "site-specific" piece that "embodies the themes of movement, justice and connectivity, aiming to enhance the visual landscape of the area and foster community engagement."

Interested artists are encouraged to submit their qualifications to work on the project. The city says that the deadline for portfolio and proposal submissions is 11:59 p.m. on March 18.

The project will include a $24,000 commission, which is supposed to cover fees and materials. The project's completion deadline is June 15, 2024.

"The selected mural will be a vibrant addition to the city’s public art collection, positioned on a portion of the prominent concrete retaining wall along Nelson Hackett. The mural site is primed for transformation into a captivating visual narrative that will engage both pedestrians and motorists alike," the city said.

The call is open to artists 18 years old or older, preferably with experience in doing outdoor murals. The mural will go alongside other artwork already on the wall at Nelson Hackett Boulevard. The city says that its goal is for the 500-foot wall to be fully covered in art over the next five years in anticipation for Fayetteville's bicentennial.

Submissions will be reviewed based on merit and other factors. The Fayetteville Arts Council, as well as members of the Historic District Commission and Black Historic Preservation Commission, will select four artists as finalists and will then have to develop a proposed design. From there, one artist will be chosen and will have the opportunity to bring their vision to life on Nelson Hackett.

"Submissions will be thoroughly reviewed based on artistic merit, thematic relevance and feasibility. A nonmandatory pre-submission meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 6, at 5:30 p.m. to offer prospective applicants the opportunity to learn about project specifics and ask questions," the city said.

The city says that an information meeting will be held March 6, which can be accessed here
