FORDYCE, Ark. — It's been three days since a deadly mass shooting happened at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce. Now, there are signs of support and prayers going all around the city and state of Arkansas.
A sign above the Mad Butcher, where the shooting happened, now says "We are Fordyce strong" showcasing just how close-knit of a community it is.
"Our heart really goes out to them and we want to express our love and our care from Warren here to Fordyce," said Vernon Colvin.
Vernon and Tammy Colvin visited from the neighboring town of Warren and placed flowers at the memorial in front of the Mad Butcher.
"Fordyce for us is just like Warren. It's a small community. We have a Mad Butcher down in Warren as well. Everybody knows everybody," added Vernon Colvin.
On Friday morning, Travis Posey shot several bullets at the Mad Butcher injuring 14 people and killing four.
Those four victims are Callie Weems, Roy Sturgis, Shirley Taylor, and Ellen Shrum.
Fordyce Mayor John MacNichol explained how he knew all of the victims. He said he remembers Callie, and that she put herself in the line of fire to help others during the shooting.
"Callie was a hero. Callie ran back in to cover a worker that just checked her out. Risking her life to go back in there. And Roy was in there. He went over there to cover Callie because they were kin," said Mayor MacNichol.
He has been in touch with the families and said his next step is to make sure his police officers are taken care of.
"My biggest thing right now is trying to get them where they can get back out on the street. Right now, I have other counties helping us patrol, so we need to get our officers back on the street," said Mayor MacNichol.
We spoke with a manager at the Mad Butcher who said they don't have a reopen date right now. Though they are making sure their employees are okay first, and then they want to hear from the community on how they can better serve them.
