FORT SMITH, Ark. — Despite the rain this morning, people gathered in Fort Smith for the annual Polar Plunge.
Plungers took a dive into some chilly water at Creekmore Park in Fort Smith. Proceeds from the event go towards Special Olympics Arkansas, providing opportunities to over 19,000 Special Olympics athletes.
The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) also got in on the fun.
"This is a fundraiser that we do for Arkansas Special Olympics. You know it is all about the athletes it is all about raising that money to get them where they need to go, whether that is state games, world games all of the things that pay for their training, their travel, uniforms. This is such a great cause guys, because you are changing lives, and this event shows how much we are in support, and it is a fun thing to do," one officer said.
People who made it out to the event also got a chance to win some cash prizes.
"The 2024 Polar Plunge for Arkansas Special Olympics was a huge success! Together, the community raised over 15,000 dollars for these great athletes to continue the training, travel, and competitions they so greatly love," a Facebook post from FSPD said.
