Fort Smith awarded millions in EPA grants to reduce pollution

Fort Smith will receive $14.5 million of the grant to fund several projects.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded the Arkansas Tri-Region — which includes Central Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas, and the River Valley — a nearly $100 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant.

Fort Smith will receive $14.5 million of the grant to fund several projects:

  • Alleyway Rehabilitation: The city plans to transform alleyways into multi-use paths for more sustainable transportation options.
  • E-bike Rebate Program: The program will offer vouchers for e-bike purchases with plans to prioritize income-qualified residents.
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure: This will fund the installation of 13 EV charging stations at seven locations across Fort Smith.
  • Public Housing Solar Project: An 850 kW solar power system will be installed in units at Nelson Hall Home and the Fort Smith Housing Authority Administrative Offices. It will power 288 units.
  • Workforce Development: Funding will help organize training workshops, internships, and apprenticeships to build a skilled workforce in conservation, solar energy, and energy efficiency.

Fort Smith Mayor George McGill said the city is honored to receive this grant. With the money, he is looking forward to improving the lives of Fort Smith residents.

"The funds from this award will be instrumental in advancing key projects within our Energy & Environment Innovation Plan," he said. "These initiatives will improve the quality of life for our residents and positively impact our environment, ensuring a healthier future for the City of Fort Smith and the entire Natural State."
