Cause of fire in Fort Smith on Wheeler Avenue revealed

According to Millard, a commercial property housing multiple storage containers caught fire.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Fort Smith emergency crews responded to a structure fire at 1900 Wheeler Avenue at 5:52 p.m. on April 1, according to Fire Marshal Ethan Millard.

Police blocked off Wheeler Avenue for hours on Monday as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

According to Millard, a commercial property housing multiple storage containers caught fire.

After conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, Millard said they "determined that chemicals used in the production process was improperly placed in a dumpster, creating exothermic heating, which started the fire that spread through the entirety of the warehouse."

Millard says there were no injuries.
