Fort Smith police release new details on hit-and-run that left 69-year-old woman hospitalized

Although FSPD investigated the area, they were not able to find any footage of the incident by nearby surveillance systems.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) is investigating an incident where a vehicle fled after hitting a pedestrian in the 1600-1700 block of South 21st Street.

According to police, on Sept. 7, officers found a 69-year-old woman in a driveway with serious injuries after she was reportedly hit by a vehicle. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital but later transferred to an out-of-area hospital for "further treatment," according to police.

A release from FSPD stated the woman's condition is improving and she is expected to recover.

Although FSPD investigated the area, they said they weren't able to find any footage of the incident from nearby surveillance systems. The investigation is still active, but police ask anyone with information on this incident to contact them at 479-709-5000.

FSPD said more information will be shared as the investigation progresses and on Sept. 12, the department released more details about the incident.

According to the release, a passerby provided information to officers that the incident happened between 5:17 a.m. and 5:40 a.m. on Sept. 7.

A GoFundMe has been started to help with medical expenses for the woman.

On Sept. 20, FSPD announced that 50-year-old James Edward Swinson was arrested in connection to the incident.
