Fort Smith Police Department launches new Traffic Unit

Eight officers and one leading sergeant will monitor red light running, crosswalk violations, speeding, and other traffic violations.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) hopes to enhance road safety and ensure the efficiency of the city's roads with the newly launched Traffic Unit.

The specialized team began operations on March 18.

Eight officers and one leading sergeant will head FSPD's Traffic Unit through injury and fatality accident investigations, special patrols, training awareness, and traffic enforcement. They will also monitor red light running, crosswalk violations, speeding, and other traffic violations.

"The establishment of the Traffic Unit underscores our ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of our community," Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker said. "By addressing key traffic concerns and enforcing laws more effectively, we are taking a proactive step toward reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Our team is ready to make a positive impact, and we look forward to the continued support of the Fort Smith community."
