Investigation underway in Fort Smith after man reportedly offers child a ride near Kimmons Middle School

The school is taking the opportunity to educate students on the dangers of strangers online and in person.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — A man tried to offer a ride to a child near Kimmons Middle School on Oct. 10, according to the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD).

FSPD told 5NEWS said it is an open investigation and it has not been confirmed whether or not the man had intentions of kidnapping the student.

Kimmons Middle School Resource Officer Darrel Spells said since the incident happened off campus, they are working closely with FSPD to investigate the incident.

Amid this incident, Spells said it's important for students to remain vigilant.

"We encourage the kids, if they see something out of the ordinary, something really suspicious, to come to a trusted adult or their school resource officer and to let them know what's going on," Spells said. "The tiniest detail can make or break an investigation."

The school is taking the opportunity to educate students on the dangers of strangers online and in person. He asks that parents have conversations with their children at home to increase disaster prevention and safety efforts.

No further details were released, but officials asked anyone with information to contact them at (479) 709-5000 or the school police department at (479) 785-3664, ext. 91234.

FSPD said more details would be released when they are available.
