Police: Child hit by car near Fort Smith elementary school

FSPD told 5NEWS that the pedestrian hit was a child who is now being air lifted due to injuries.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Fort Smith police have responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash near an elementary school.

A release from the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) said that the crash involves injuries and took place in front of Morrison Elementary School on 3415 Newlon Road.

FSPD told 5NEWS that the pedestrian hit is a student who is now being air lifted due to injuries.

Police and fire are responding, and FSPD said to consider alternate routes until the scene is cleared.

Eric Huber, the Chief of Police for the Fort Smith Public Schools Police Department, told 5NEWS that the child is under 10 years old.

"We were called to Morrison Elementary School in reference to a child under 10 years of age that had stepped in front of a vehicle. The vehicle proceeded forward in the pickup line and ran over the child."

Huber also noted that this was not a hit and run incident.

"It absolutely was not a hit and run. As soon as the driver had seen what had happened, they immediately stopped and got out," Huber explained, adding that the incident happened during dismissal time at the elementary school.
