Fort Smith police officers shot at overnight, no arrests made

Police describe the car involved as a newer dark-colored Dodge Charger, possibly with gunfire damage to the front windshield and hood.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) is looking for a suspect or suspects who shot at officers on Thursday, June 27.

The incident took place near Zero Street at around 12:13 a.m., according to officials.

A release from FSPD states, "Officers were fired upon by the occupant or occupants of a suspicious vehicle," and one of the officers shot back.

The vehicle fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet. No injuries were reported, police said.

On Thursday evening, FSPD released more information on the car they believe the suspect was driving at the time of the shooting.

What police call the "involved vehicle" is described as a newer model dark-colored Dodge Charger with a spoiler. Police said the Charger could have damage to the front windshield and hood from the gunfire.

"Detectives are actively collecting video surveillance from local businesses and residents to obtain an image of the vehicle for public release. An updated media release will be issued if and when a suitable image is obtained," FSPD said.

FSPD asks anyone with information to call 911 or call (479) 709-5000.
