FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) has issued a warning to the public about jury duty phone scams.

According to police, scammers are calling people posing as a sergeant with the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office. Victims are being told they have a warrant for their arrest due to missing jury duty.

Officials said recently, a scammer asked a victim for $4,000 to clear the warrant for his arrest and then "an additional request for $1,000." The scammers tell victims they are under a "gag order" to avoid elaborating on the alleged situation.

FSPD reminds the public that law enforcement will never ask for money or personal information over the phone and that warrants are not issued over the phone.

Officials ask anyone who receives a call like this to hang up and call FSPD at 479-709-5000. You can also submit a complaint to the FBI here.
