FORT SMITH, Ark. — Spanish version: Para español haga clic aqui.
Fort Smith Board of Directors approved a spay and neuter program in January, which caters to lower-income residents. A month later, vouchers provided by this approval are now available to residents.
The animal ordinance requires all cats and dogs to be spayed and neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated for rabies. Each qualifying household will receive four $100 vouchers per household. These vouchers can be used at participating vet clinics.
The City of Fort Smith announced on Feb. 12 that the vouchers are now available for residents who meet certain income guidelines. Eligibility guidelines are available on the city's website.
"We have seen an increase in the stray pet population, and I think this will help reduce that," Josh Buchfink, public relations manager for the City of Fort Smith, said in January when the ordinance was passed. "It allows low-income residents [to] basically get their pet spayed and neutered, free of charge, at participating veterinary clinics."
According to the city's website, only Kitties & Kanines Vet Clinic in Fort Smith is accepting the Spay and Neuter Vouchers at this time.
