Former Governor Asa Hutchinson to teach class at U of A, 'This is where it all began for me'

"To be here is an honor and exhilarating. To see the excitement of the students and their dedication to make a difference and pursue justice is inspiring."

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson will be stepping back into his old classrooms, but this time as a professor with almost half a century of legal and political experience under his belt, according to the University of Arkansas (U of A) in Fayetteville.

Hutchinson, a 1975 U of A law school grad, said he looks forward to teaching a course on state and federal government leadership and participating in other school programs.

"This is where it all began for me," Hutchinson said. "To be here is an honor and exhilarating. To see the excitement of the students and their dedication to make a difference and pursue justice is inspiring."

"Governor Hutchinson's professional career as an accomplished attorney and his political career as a United States representative, governor, and presidential candidate make him an excellent addition to the law school community," Cynthia Nance, the dean of the School of Law said.

Hutchinson was appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas, and in 1996, he won his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his third term there, President George W. Bush appointed him to serve as administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Over the course of his career, Hutchinson served in many different roles and was "invited to the White House several times to join discussions about health care, Medicaid, and education issues," according to the U of A statement.

Hutchinson served as the 46th Governor of Arkansas, and he was re-elected with 65% of the vote, a higher margin than any other Republican candidate in state history.

Hutchinson is set to join the U of A as an executive in residence during the Spring 2025 semester.
