AG Griffin rejects 4 submissions of Arkansas FOIA amendments

The proposals were submitted by a group trying to make a plan to protect Arkansas' transparency laws before voters.

ARKANSAS, USA — Arkansas State Attorney General, Tim Griffin rejected more proposed constitutional amendments on Jan. 8.

The proposals were submitted by a group trying to take a plan to protect Arkansas' transparency laws before voters.

Griffin rejected four separate proposals after already rejecting another one last month.

Here are the proposals that were rejected:

  • Request for review and certification of “The Arkansas Government Transparency Amendment.”
  •  Request for review and certification of "The Open Meetings and Open Records in State and Local Government Amendment.”
  • Request for review and certification of “The Arkansas Government Disclosure Amendment.”
  • Request for review and certification of “The Arkansas Government Openness Amendment.”

Griffin responded by saying he found multiple issues with the submissions. One of the issues includes what he describes as a "failure of clarity" in many of the amendment's key terms so voters are not able to understand exactly what they are deciding on. Griffin also cited a clause in the ballot question that he felt was "too lengthy."

Because of the rejection, supporters can't begin gathering petition signatures until Griffin signs off on the submissions.

Supporters have not said if they are planning to resubmit the proposal addressing these issues cited.
