4 cooling centers open in Fort Smith amid summer heatwave

Summer 2024 is coming in hot and the city has opened up spaces and extended hours for people to access during extremely hot temperatures.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The City of Fort Smith announced four cooling centers open to the public to help relieve the heat. Summer 2024 is coming in hot and the city has opened up spaces and extended hours for people to access during extremely hot temperatures.

Riverview Hope Campus

Location:  301 S. E Street

Phone number: 479-688-4764

Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If temperatures exceed 95 degrees, the organization will open additional hours. 

Next Step Homeless Services

Location: : 123 N. 6th Street

Phone number: 479-782-5433

Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

Salvation Army

Location: 301 N. 6th Street

Phone number: 479-783-6145

Hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If the National Weather Service announces an excessive heat advisory, the location will open if they are closed. 

Sebastian Retired Citizens Association 

Location: 2700 Cavanaguh Road 

Phone number: 479-996-6581

The organization asks the public to call ahead of time if they plan to use this location as a cooling center.
